iGA Istanbul Airport's Journey
iGA was established by the Cengiz-MAPA-Limak-Kolin-Kalyon joint venture group on October 7, 2013 with the aim of introducing a new airport to Istanbul, one of the most developed cities in the world and with a long history. Istanbul Airport was constructed in a record time of 42 months, and is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Türkiye. As of April 2022, iGA's shareholding structure is as follows: 55% shareholding by Kalyon Holding, and 45% shareholding by Cengiz Holding.
The geographic location of iGA Istanbul Airport has led to its status as an international hub. It serves an estimated 90 million passengers annually, with a main terminal of 1.4 million square meters, three independent runways, an air control tower, and support facilities.
iGA Istanbul Airport, having accommodated over 250 million passengers during the five-year span since its establishment, is now capable of operating flights to 315 destinations around the world as of January 2024. Once all phases are complete, iGA Istanbul Airport will offer flights to more than 300 destinations with an annual passenger capacity of 200 million.
As one of the largest aviation projects in Türkiye, iGA Istanbul Airport's goal is to be an attraction point, not just for Istanbul, but for the entire region and even the world as a whole. Istanbul Airport contributes significantly to the country's economy through the number of staff members that it employs. With its capacity to provide tens of thousands of jobs, iGA never compromises on equality and inclusiveness with its philosophy of "the right person for the right job". With the investments it makes in its human resources, iGA has made Türkiye a strong player in the global aviation industry.
As the most significant global transfer hub in the region, and with its excellent infrastructure, modern technology, and high-quality air travel experience, iGA Istanbul Airport has become the leader in Turkish aviation, bringing the country to the next level with its performance during the pandemic and post-pandemic periods. It continues to be an important center for cargo trade having recently increased its number of cargo destinations to 97, and holding an initial cargo capacity of 4 million tons. The iGA Istanbul Airport Cargo Center will have the necessary infrastructure for a cargo capacity of 5.5 million tons after the investments in all phases are completed.
iGA Istanbul Airport has been the recipient of more than 60 national and international awards during its four-year tenure, thanks to its exemplary practices in the aviation sector. At the 16th ACI Europe Awards held by Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), iGA Istanbul Airport was presented with the 'Digital Transformation' award, winning the title of 'Best Airport in Europe' in the field of digital transformation. In addition to these achievements, iGA was presented with the '5-Star Airport' award by Skytrax, one of the top aviation organizations in the international arena. Its preventative measures during the COVID-19 pandemic earned it the '5-Star COVID-19 Safety' award, becoming one of only two airports in the world to have received two awards at the same time.
